Issue #1: Generalist
Happy New Year and welcome to Issue #1.
In an effort not to overthink everything these next few weeks, I’ve decided to keep things simple and let this newsletter naturally develop and evolve over time. My vision is for this to become more than just a newsletter and something more of a digital publication; A publication that explores movement and the human body through many different lens.
This generalist approach to the publication will, hopefully, allow for “cross-pollinating” of ideas meant to broaden your perspective and your personal practice.
READ, WATCH, LISTEN ⤵
READ: “Having A Practice”
I recently came across the Bamboo Body’s blog and I often turn back to many of the articles. Thank you to Anna for taking the time to articulate her thoughts and share her insights. This one, specifically, is on what it means to have a practice.
READ: “Range” David Epstein
In Range, David Epstein makes the case for a generalist approach: a broad competence in many areas rather than the extreme mastery of one. Not only does cultivating range free you to pursue more of your interests, it entails professional advantages you never could have predicted.
WATCH: “Lessons Behind Ido Portal”
This video beautifully explains not just Ido’s philosophy, but also the generalist approach as it applies to movement. Definitely recommend it if you haven’t watched this one before.
AESTHETICALLY PLEASING 👀
Carving, formations. Beautiful artwork by artist Lesia Lumi.
TINY INSIGHT 🧠
“The longer you're a teacher, the less you remember what it is like to be a student. The longer you're a doctor, the less you remember what it is like to be a patient. The longer you're a coach, the less you remember what it is like to be a player. Change positions. A new perspective can improve your old methods.” ~James Clear
